Respiratory Team (Community)
The Respiratory Team offers a multi-disciplinary team approach to management of COPD, Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) and Bronchiectasis throughout the Ashton, Leigh and Wigan borough.
The team consists of Specialist Nurses, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists.
- Who can access the service?
The service provides advice, information, treatment initiation, long-term management and support services for adults with a confirmed respiratory diagnosis and their families
However, if the diagnosis is asthma the referral is re-directed to our Asthma Nurse Specialist. - How can people access the service?
Written referrals are accepted, either by letter or referral forms, from healthcare professionals.
Patients may also refer directly by telephone.
Referrals will be triaged on receipt to meet the referral criteria for each aspect of the multi-disciplinary team.
- Where is the service offered?
All patients referred to the nursing and OT services are offered a domiciliary visit for an initial assessment.
However, clinic appointments at Boston House, Wigan can be offered if preferable. Referrals to Pulmonary Rehabilitation will be offered clinic appointments at Boston House, Platt Bridge HC or Leigh HC, dependant on patient address. - Community Home Oxygen service
We offer a screening service for all patients who meet the referral criteria, including non-respiratory patients.
We also case manage patients who are prescribed oxygen, working in conjunction with the Hospital Oxygen Service at WWL. - Our Service Promise

The Respiratory team works closely across the multi-disciplinary team. Links have been formed with the Acute COPD Unit, RAEI, Asthma Nurse Specialist, Community Matrons, Active Living and Wigan and Leigh Hospice.
