Baby Changing and Breast Feeding Facilities

All of our hospitals offer baby changing and breastfeeding facilities. Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust believes that breastfeeding is the healthiest way for a woman to feed her baby and recognises the important health benefits now known to exist for both mother and her child.

The Trust has recently been awarded Wigan Council's Breastfeeding Friendly Award. WWL joins 150 Wigan businesses who have already received this award.  This means that as a Breastfeeding Friendly Hospital, a commitment has been made to promote, support and protect breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding affords significant short and long term benefits to the mother and baby. The Trust, as a healthcare provider, pledges to prioritise the protection of breastfeeding when ever possible.

It is recognised that each mother and baby will have very individual needs. Staff will assess these needs, and plan with the family, how breastfeeding can be sustained during the mother's visit or stay in hospital.

This initiative is part of the wider healthy hospital scheme and is undertaken in partnership with NHS Ashton, Leigh and Wigan / Wigan Council.  Alison Healey, Breastfeeding Strategic Support and Commissioning Lead, NHSALW has worked with the Trust to support their achievement of the award and states:

'The Breastfeeding Friendly Award is a very positive step towards the support of Breastfeeding families. Breastfeeding provides major short term and long term health and psychological benefits to both mother and baby.  Families will be greatly reassured that staff within the Trust will support their continuation of breastfeeding during their visit or stay at the Trust'.

In association with NHS Ashton, Leigh and Wigan, our Midwifery Team have launched a new breastfeeding information website.

This website is aimed at antenatal and postnatal mothers to give breastfeeding information. Mothers can sign up to the website to support breastfeeding in addition to giving us feedback and help us to improve our service.
