Sohail Akhtar is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Hands and Reconstructive Surgeon. He completed his undergraduate training at Liverpool University Medical School. During his undergraduate training he had the opportunity to visit Harefield Hospital, London where inspired under the tutelage of Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub eminent Cardiac Surgeon and pioneer of heart transplantation in the UK, Mr Akhtar developed a passion and interest in surgery.
After completing basic surgical training and being awarded Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons he underwent national specialist training in Plastic Surgery, during which, he was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Plastic Surgery. He is a fully accredited Plastic Surgeon and is on the GMC specialist register for Plastic Surgery.
During his training Mr Akhtar also developed a special interest in hand surgery, reconstructive and aesthetic / cosmetic surgery. He undertook a Hand Surgery fellowship at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby as well as a National Interface Hand Surgery Fellowship at the Wrightington Upper Limb Unit. Mr Akhtar has worked in teaching hospitals in Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and London.
He has 30 publications in the international medical literature, has presented at multiple international scientific meetings and written textbook chapters in both Hand Surgery and Plastic Surgery.
Outside of UK medicine Mr Akhtar is involved with charitable medical aid work including personally going on charitable missions to Sierra Leone and provided emergency surgical relief aid by travelling to Pakistan during the 2005 earthquake disaster.
