Mr Paraoan is on the Specialist Register as General Surgeon and his subspecialty practice is in Colorectal Surgery. He trained in the Mersey Deanery, has a Diploma in Laparoscopic Surgery from the University of Strasbourg and European Institute of Telesurgery and completed travelling fellowships in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA (2007) and at Osaka Medical University, Japan (2018).

Mr Paraoan has introduced in the Trust, the laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery to for the treatment of rectal and colon cancer and of benign bowel conditions (Crohn’s disease, colitis, rectal prolapse). Over the years, he achieved excellent results in the treatment of colorectal cancer as reported by the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland outcomes data (https://www.acpgbi.org.uk/surgeon-outcomes/wrightington-wigan-and-leigh-nhs-foundation-trust/).

In 2008 Mr Paraoan also introduced the transanal endoscopic microsurgery, a modern surgical treatment of rectal polyps or early rectal cancers, which avoids major surgery. He has developed expertise in endoscopic treatment of complex large bowel polyps, being able by this to provide the full range of Minimally Invasive Colorectal service.

Mr Paraoan performs routinely laparoscopic cholecystectomies (keyhole surgery to remove the gallbladder), laparoscopic hernia repairs and uses laparoscopic surgery to treat a variety of surgical emergencies.

He has taken managerial, teaching and leadership roles in the Trust, at regional and national level. He is Clinical Director for General Surgery and Colorectal Multidisciplinary Team lead at WWL. He is Clinical Lead for General Surgery for the North-West Greater Manchester sector of the “Healthier Together” transformation programme. At national level, Mr Paraoan is Chair of the Colorectal Section of the British Society of Gastroenterology.

Mr Paraoan is a keen teacher and has set up an M Ch. in Colorectal Surgery course at Edge Hill University accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons (England) (https://www.edgehill.ac.uk/courses/master-of-surgery/). He is also faculty trainer at the “LAPCO TT “ - Train the Trainer in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery and he is member of the Academy of Clinical Educators through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

Mr Paraoan is very active in research and clinical trials and has contributed to several national colorectal surgical registries (LOREC and taTME).
