Special warnings and precautions:

Lansoprazole orodispersible 15mg tablets may be halved to provide a 7.5mg dose or quartered to provide a 3.75mg dose. You will have been given a tablet cutter to help you do this. 30mg tablets are available for higher doses. Lansoprazole orodispersible tablets disperse in water to coated granules roughly 0.33mm in diameter. The coating is to protect the medication from being broken down by acid in the stomach and if crushed, could lead to your child receiving an ineffective dose.

Lansoprazole should be given in the morning. Try to give at least 30 minutes before food.

Administration via oral syringe:

  1. Remove the plunger from an oral syringe. Place a lansoprazole orodispersible tablet (or proportion of a tablet) into the empty syringe. Without crushing the tablet, replace the plunger and fill with 5‑10mL water.
  2. Allow tablet to disperse, shaking if needed until a cloudy mixture is formed.
  3. Before the mixture settles, give to your baby or young child as follows:
  4. Place your baby or child in an upright position (not lying flat). For younger babies, cradle them in your arms
  5. Place the tip of the oral syringe inside your child’s mouth between the gums and the inside surface of their cheek
  6. Gently push the plunger to squirt small amounts of medicine into the sides of your child’s mouth. Allow your child to swallow before you carry on pushing the plunger.
  7. Refill the syringe with approximately 2mL (or 5mL for 30mg dose) of water, shake and give any remaining contents.
  8. Take care not to crush granules as syringe is emptied.
  9. Use immediately
  10. Use a fresh tablet to prepare each dose.

Administration via NG or PEG tube (tube size at least 8 French):

  1. Stop the enteral (PEG/NG) feed (if applicable) 30 minutes before the dose is due.
  2. Flush the enteral feed tube with water.
  3. Remove the plunger from an oral syringe. Place a lansoprazole orodispersible tablet (or proportion of a tablet) into the empty syringe. Without crushing the tablet, replace the plunger and fill with 5‑10mL water and a little air.
  4. Allow tablet to disperse, shaking if necessary.
  5. Before the mixture settles, expel any air and then flush the medication down feeding tube using a push-pull technique to keep granules suspended. If necessary, refill the syringe with a little water, shake and give any remaining contents.
  6. Flush the enteral feeding tube.
  7. Restart feeds (if applicable) 30 minutes after dose.
  8. Use a fresh tablet to prepare each dose.

Any remaining tablet portions can be returned to your local pharmacy for destruction.
