What is a Lung Cancer Specialist Nurse?

The lung cancer specialist nurse is a registered nurse with experience within the field of lung cancer and respiratory diseases.  We are employed by Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh NHS Foundation Trust to provide a service to patients who have a diagnosis of primary lung cancer.  We work closely with the Respiratory Physicians and other members of the multi-Disciplinary team.  Referrals are accepted from any health professional involved in the patient’s care.

What service do we offer to patients?

The lung cancer specialist nurses will support patients from diagnosis, through treatments.  We will be one of your points of contact to ensure timely referrals to other services, and to offer advice and support to you and your carers.  We are able to offer advice on symptom control e.g. pain or breathlessness. The Lead Lung Cancer Nurse is a prescriber, and is able to prescribe some of your medications

The lung cancer specialist nurses hold weekly nurse led clinics on both Wigan and Leigh hospital sites for monitoring of patients undergoing treatments or on completion of treatments. We offer a holistic needs assessment clinic a few weeks after your diagnosis and after treatment. This is an assessment designed to help us support you by identifying any concerns you may have and information you may require. On completion of the assessment a care and support plan is generated.

The lung cancer specialist nurse refers patients to other disciplines as their needs require i.e. Social Workers, District Nurses or Specialist Supportive and Palliative Care Nurses (formerly known as Community Macmillan Nurses) and Hospital Supportive and Palliative Care Team.
