What is the role of the Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Macmillan Nurse Key Worker?

The Upper GI Macmillan Nurse Key Worker provides a personalised service for people diagnosed with a gastric or oesophageal cancer. The Upper GI Macmillan Nurse works closely with the gastroenterology physicians who are involved with your care during your investigations and diagnosis. 

 

The role is available to provide a point of contact for patients and their families whose lives have been affected by a life changing diagnosis. This point of contact continues from diagnosis, through investigations to treatment and beyond.

 

The Upper GI Macmillan Nurse works closely with the specialist nursing teams across Greater Manchester close liaising with the teams at Salford Royal and Christie’s which are the treating centres for oesophageal and gastric cancers for WWL patients. 

 

We can offer:

  • Advice and support to you and your family.
  • A link with other services and treatment centres.
  • A Point of contact – Key Worker role.
  • Referral to other services as needs require.
  • Support group meetings.

If you require help or advice outside of our working hours, you can seek support from your GP or District Nurse.

 

GP Alliance Out of hours- Providing access to clinicians across the Borough of Wigan and Leigh for residents that require non-urgent treatment out of surgery operating hours.

Alternatively call NHS 111 if have an urgent medical problem and are unsure what to do.
