Bank Holiday Information for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's Funeral

Tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Following the confirmation that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II sadly passed away on Thursday 8th September 2022, the Government has now confirmed that there will be a period of mourning relating to her lying in state and that Monday 19th September will be a public Bank Holiday for her subsequent funeral.

In line with regular public Bank Holidays that occur throughout a calendar year, Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) would like to reassure its patients and the public that its hospital and community sites are fully prepared to respond to demand on services.

Any patients with a planned appointment who may be affected by the Bank Holiday will be contacted by WWL and informed of any changes in advance.

As with any Bank Holiday, the NHS is expecting an extremely busy weekend across the Wigan Borough over weekend, and WWL is encouraging anyone who needs to check symptoms or get health advice to use the NHS 111 online service first.

The 111 online service offers patients quick advice and the best options for getting the care they need, including getting a call back from a trained clinician or nurse, booking them an appointment in A&E, or providing advice on how to help them recover.

111.nhs.uk can tell you:

  • where to get help for your symptoms, if you’re not sure what to do
  • how to find general health information and advice
  • where to get an emergency supply of your prescribed medicine
  • how to get a repeat prescription
  • emergency dental appointments

You should still ring 999 if you experience:

  • signs of a heart attack like pain like a heavy weight in the centre of your chest
  • signs of stroke such as your face dropping on one side
  • difficulty breathing
  • heavy bleeding that won’t stop
  • seizures
  • or sudden and rapid swelling of the eyes, lips, throat or tongue

Out of hours access to GPs on evenings and weekends is also available by calling 01942 482848.
