WWL Attains Excellent Results in Recent PLACE Assessment

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust (WWL) is incredibly proud to announce the Trust has scored 100 per cent for cleanliness in the latest PLACE assessments

Patient-Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE) assessments provide motivation for improvement by providing a clear message, directly from patients, about how the environment or services of a Trust might be enhanced.

Overall, the PLACE results show that WWL ranks fifth out of all NHS Acute/Specialist Trusts in England, and third highest in the North West. Both are improvements on the previous PLACE assessments where WWL ranked seventh nationally and fourth regionally.

The 2023 PLACE assessments took place late last year across all Trust sites and included, for the first time, the Thomas Linacre Centre and six of the community premises owned by WWL.

The assessments involve local people, known as Patient Assessors, going into hospitals as part of teams to assess how the environment supports the provision of clinical care, assessing such things as privacy and dignity, food, cleanliness and general building maintenance and, more recently, the extent to which the environment is able to support the care of those with dementia.

WWL’s cleanliness score of 100 per cent put the Trust in joint first place alongside four other Trusts nationally. Condition, appearance, and maintenance also scored high at 99.94% per cent which also placed WWL second in the country.

WWL’s dementia score was 95.4 per cent, and disability access came in second at 98.39 per cent.

Overall, WWL’s food average score was 95.65 per cent. The food assessment is made up of three areas; Food (95.65), Organisational Food (94.92) and Ward Food (96.2). Privacy and dignity score was 89.81 per cent

John Fairhurst, Director of Estates and Facilities said: “Without doubt, to score 100 per cent in cleanliness, putting us in the top five of all acute and community NHS Trusts in the country, is outstanding and is a real credit to the hard work and dedication of our outstanding Estates and Facilities teams.

“A huge amount of daily effort goes into creating a safe space for our patients, and the scores from this assessment really do reflect that hard work.

“Whilst we are very proud, we also know that there are still areas to improve on in readiness for the next inspection.”
