Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will mark Baby Loss Awareness Week from Thursday 9th to Wednesday 15th October 2025, offering support and remembrance for those affected by pregnancy and baby loss.
During the week, two special events will be held to provide a supportive space for families and staff to share their experiences and honour the memories of lost babies.
On Thursday 9th October, a special Baby Loss Awareness Week Service of Remembrance was held at St Matthews Church, Billinge Road, Highfield for families and loved ones to reflect, remember, and find comfort together with the Trust’s Bereavement Midwives and Chaplaincy Team. This was followed by fellowship and refreshments at Highfield Cricket Club.
Bereavement Midwives, Cheryl Phillips and Sam Barnsley, said: “Everyone who would find it helpful, regardless of when their loss was, or if you’re supporting loved ones who have suffered a loss, is welcome to attend our events.
“The service encouraged conversations about baby loss and gave local bereaved parents and families an opportunity to talk about their precious babies. It also gave us an opportunity to highlight the work we are beginning at the Trust, to provide on-going support to bereaved parents and families through the support group and other services we offer.”
Later in the week, on Wednesday 15th October, a peaceful Twilight Walk will take place at Mesnes Park, Wigan, to honour the babies lost too soon and support families who have experienced baby loss.
The walk will begin from the band stand, and candles or lanterns will be provided for participants to carry during the walk as part of the national, ‘Wave of Light’. Tea, coffee and cake will be available before and after the walk.
All ages are welcome but anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. This event is free to attend, with those wishing to join kindly asked register in advance so numbers can be managed and everyone is looked after. Register here: https://forms.office.com/e/Z5FFiaaBTs.
In addition, WWL’s Tree of Hope will light up in pink and blue at the front the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, as a visible show of support for Baby Loss Awareness Week.
