Father and Daughter Physio Team Win at National Cycling Championships

A dynamic father-daughter duo has won a silver medal at the British Cycling National Tandem Sprint Championship.

Peter and Megan Boyd, who both work as Physiotherapists at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WWL), picked up the silverware in Newport last month in their first race together on the velodrome.

Peter, a Specialist Vascular Physiotherapist, who has worked for the Trust since 1995 and is based at its Boston House site, said; "Coming second place came as a surprise to us both, as we entered the event to make up numbers.  This was the first time we have ever ridden on the velodrome together, so to achieve more than we expected is an amazing feeling."

Peter has competed in 30 National Tandem Sprint Championship events and won medals in more than 20 of them. He has represented Great Britain on multiple occasions, including in three World Championships and the Commonwealth Games in New Zealand 1990 and has been the National Tandem Sprint Champion 13 times.

His daughter, Megan, who is a Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist, also working at Boston House, has followed in her dad’s footsteps, competing in many cycling championships since the age of three and has held the Junior Tandem Sprint World Record. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck and the gyms closed, Megan took to riding her road bike and has competed in several road races, finishing in the top ten places.

Now, Peter and Megan, who live in Clayton-le-Woods near Chorley, have their sights set on next year’s competition.

“Hopefully, we’ll be a bit faster next year,” added Peter, “I hope to be even fitter next year as I hit 60 years of age next March and I also hope to compete in the World Masters Championships, health willing.”

Hazel Hendriksen, Director of Operations for Specialist Services said: “We are immensely proud of the achievements of Megan and Peter. They should be very proud of themselves, as are their WWL colleagues.”
