The Amputee Rehabilitation Service is based at:

Leigh Infirmary
The Avenue

This service is provided by a clinical specialist physiotherapist with therapy assistant support and is available three days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) from 8:00am to 4:30pm.
Aim
Our aim is to provide the necessary rehabilitation to enable you to achieve your maximum level of independence following discharge from hospital after undergoing lower limb amputation surgery.
Eligibility
The service is available to anyone over the age of 18 who resides in the Wigan and Leigh area.
Services Provided at Leigh Infirmary
- Outpatient physiotherapy sessions. (Ambulance transport can be arranged).
- Community home visits when necessary.
- Amputee Rehabilitation alongside the team at the Specialised Ability Centre in Manchester.
- Assessments for and provision of prosthetic limbs at the Specialised Ability Centre in Manchester, involving a multidisciplinary team.
Referral into the Service
During your hospital stay, your ward physiotherapist or occupational therapist will refer you to our service. We will contact you once you have been discharged home to arrange a suitable appointment.
Attendance for Outpatient Sessions
- Please report to the Area 5 gym at Leigh Infirmary.
- If ambulance transport is required, we will arrange this for you when we contact you to arrange your appointments.
- Please wear loose comfortable clothing suitable for exercising.
- If you are diabetic, please note that exercise can lower your blood sugar levels. It is advisable to bring a suitable snack/drink to raise your sugar levels if required and, if available, your blood sugar testing kit. There is a café on site for refreshments if required.
- Attendance continues until your individual goals have been achieved.
