Background:

John is on the Specialist Register as an Orthopaedic Consultant, and his clinical practice is surgery of the lower limbs. Initially appointed as a consultant at North Manchester General Hospital in 1987, he moved to Wrightington Hospital in 2001.  In addition John is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Manchester.

Since moving to Wrightington, John has specialised in hip and knee arthroplasty surgery (operation for construction of a new movable joint). This interest commenced during his time as an orthopaedic trainee when John worked as the first Charnley arthroplasty fellow working with Professor Mike Wroblewski at Wrightington Hospital.

John has been involved with treating elite sportsmen and women since 1993 and his patients have included international footballers and cricketers.  This interest continues and he is currently collaborating with colleagues and Trust management to develop a state of the art sports injury diagnostic and treatment centre on the Wrightington site

John was Divisional Chair for the Musculoskeletal Division within the Trust from 2006 - 2010.  His leadership in his Division contributed to the Trust achieving foundation status in December 2008.

John was elected Vice President of the British Hip Society 2009/2010 and this will lead to Presidency in 2011/12.
