Martyn Porter is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Centre for Hip Surgery, Wrightington Hospital. He qualified from the University of Manchester in 1979 and is a Fellow of the Royal College of the Surgeons of Edinburgh. He received his Specialty Training Certificate in Orthopaedics in 1989. Martyn has since developed his special interest in joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee and is particularly interested in treating young patients with arthritis and also treating patients who have problems after operations, performing revision surgery of the hip and knee.
He uses a variety of fixation techniques, both cementless and cemented fixation depending on circumstances. He is interested in using bearing combinations such as metal on cross link polyethylene and ceramic on ceramic.
Martyn was President of the British Hip Society in 2005 and President of the British Orthopaedic Association from 2012 - 2013. He has had an extensive interest in outcomes research and has run his own research unit at Wrightington since he joined in 1995.
At a national level he has been involved in the National Joint Register since it started in 2003 and for the last five years has been Chairman of the Editorial Board. In November 2014 he was appointed Vice Chairman of the Steering Committee and the Medical Director of the National Joint Register.
Internationally he collaborates with other Registers and in 2014 was elected President of the International Society of Arthroplasty Registers.
In addition he has published many papers on the outcomes of various different types of joint replacement and techniques. He is a keen teacher and has lectured on many courses and conference, both in the United Kingdom and abroad.
