If listed for surgery:
- Attend Preoperative Assessment Clinic
- Triaged medically according to type of surgery and comorbidities, information packs available to download via a QR code or sent by email – (paper format is also available if required).
- Your preop tests routinely consist of Bloods, MRSA swabs, blood pressure, heart rate and ECG. A staff nurse during your assessment will also listen to your heart and lungs. This is all to enable us to make sure you are as fit as possible for your planned surgery. Your test results may need to be reviewed by one of our Anaesthetists if they show any abnormal results.
- Your preop assessment will start with you sitting down and having an assessment/conversation with your assigned staff nurse who will go through your medical history, medication, discuss what you can and can’t do preoperatively, and answer any questions you may have. If you have also come to see the Anaesthetist, once your assessment and tests have been completed, you will then go through to see the Anaesthetist.
- We may require further input outside the department if there are any abnormal results i.e. Echocardiogram, Sleep Studies, Respiratory, Haematology, also GP input for extra information.
- If all results requested are acceptable then you’ll be “passed fit” for surgery and your assessment transferred to our Admissions Department to be listed for your surgery date.
Other Information
Your preop assessment lasts for six months and your tests last for 12 weeks. If any further outside testing/or information is required that results in your preop tests expiring, don’t worry - once everything has been completed and assessed/reviewed by your dedicated Staff Nurse or our Anaesthetic Team, you will be brought back for a “retest” appointment, which consists of repeat tests and another quicker consultation with one of our Sstaff Nurses. This assessment takes far less time than your original assessment, as this is just to make sure no changes have occurred since your last full preop.
