Smoking Cessation Service

OVERVIEW:

The WWL Smoking Cessation Service is based at the Royal Albert Edward (Wigan Infirmary). The Inpatient Smoking Cessation Service supports patients admitted to hospital who smoke by providing evidence-based treatment and specialist support to manage tobacco dependence during their stay.

What is the Smoking Cessation Service?

The service aims to:

  • Identify patients who smoke as early as possible during their admission.
  • Assess nicotine dependence and readiness to quit.
  • Provide behavioural support and advice tailored to the patient's needs.
  • Offer and facilitate access to Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), such as patches, mouth spray, lozenges, gum and inhalators where appropriate.
  • Support patients to remain smoke-free during their hospital admission.
  • Reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms and cravings.
  • Improve patient outcomes and recovery by addressing tobacco dependence
  • Arrange referral to community stop smoking services on discharge, ensuring continued support after leaving hospital.

Who is the service for?
All referrals to smoking cessation are automatically referred to the service once a patient is identified and confirmed they do smoke or use e-cigarettes.
