Rheumatology
OVERVIEW:
The Rheumatology department is based at Wrightington Hospital and is part of the Specialist Services Division. We treat a wide range of rheumatological conditions including rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis, lupus and scleroderma.
- Rheumatology Unit at Wrightington Hospital – Ward 7
Ward 7 is an 8-bed day case rheumatology unit under the supervision of Unit Manager Sister Michelle Brennan. The Ward runs Monday-Friday between 7.30am-3.30pm.
The ward is supported by a team of experienced nursing staff.
We offer a variety of treatments ranging from injections to drug infusions to treat many rheumatology conditions. The Ward also provides a nurse led blood clinic and a Methotrexate & Gold clinic.
Ward 7 also offers some Rheumatology outpatient clinics.

- Rheumatology Nurse Specialist Service
The Rheumatology Nurse Specialists run a service in conjunction with the Rheumatology Consultants for patients with a number of Rheumatological conditions. The team of nurses is based at Wrightington Hospital. A paediatric service is also available supported by a visiting Paediatric Rheumatology Consultant from Alder Hey Childrens’ Hospital.
The service operates from Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. We run follow-up clinics at both Wrightington Hospital and Leigh Infirmary with the Paediatric Service at Thomas Linacre Centre.
We also monitor the blood results of patients who are taking anti-rheumatic drugs as well as offering support to GP’s and Practice Nurses who carry out the monitoring in their surgeries. Support is offered to patients who are admitted to Ward 7, the Rheumatology day case Unit at Wrightington. We liaise closely with the Occupational therapy and Physiotherapy departments as well as offer education to patients who are newly diagnosed with arthritis as part of the holistic approach we take to helping people manage their condition.
Although this is a very busy department we try to support all patients in a timely manner in line with their individual needs.
There is a telephone helpline for Patients/carers/relatives who require advice & guidance, due to our clinical duties we require patients to leave a message, we aim to return all calls within 24 hours. We welcome all calls whatever the concern or problem
